For international applicants

Beyond borders, one register.

Applicants reach us from over a hundred countries. Equivalency, language, and status are handled in three steady steps.

01
Credentials

Foreign equivalency.

Transcripts from institutions outside the United States are evaluated by WES, ECE, or our in-house registrar — at no cost to you. The evaluation is returned with your decision letter.

02
Language

English proficiency.

TOEFL 79+ for undergraduate, 90+ for graduate, 100+ for doctoral. IELTS, Duolingo, and PTE are accepted at corresponding bands. Waivers are routine for prior English instruction.

03
Visa & residency

Documented status.

USAOU is a fully online programme; an entry visa is not required to enrol or graduate. If you wish to attend any optional residency, we issue an I-20 within ten business days of acceptance.

Frequently asked

Questions before you open the file.

Answers from the admissions desk. If yours is not here, write to us — we publish replies within one business day.

My GPA is just below the published minimum. Should I still apply?
Yes, in most cases. The published GPA is a guideline, not a gate. A strong upward trend in your final two years, a relevant work portfolio, or compelling references can place a file at the top of the queue. Faculty review every application as a whole, not as a number.
Can I apply if my prior degree is from a non-US institution?
You can. We accept transcripts from accredited institutions worldwide. Foreign credentials are evaluated for US equivalency at no charge to the applicant — the report is appended to your file before any decision is recorded.
When is the English-proficiency requirement waived?
Waivers are routine for applicants whose prior degree was taught in English, citizens of countries where English is an official language of instruction, and candidates with at least three years of recent professional work conducted in English. Request the waiver from your draft, before you submit.
Do I need a research proposal to apply for a Master's?
Only for the research-track Master's programmes — the MA by Thesis and the MSc Research stream. Coursework Master's require a statement of purpose. The doctoral file requires a full prospectus. Each programme page lists its own requirement.
How recent must my test scores be?
TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, and PTE scores remain valid for two years from the test date. The GRE and GMAT, where required, are valid for five. If your scores are older than the published window, retake the exam — we cannot accept lapsed reports.
What if a required document is delayed by my registrar?
Submit your application with a placeholder note in the upload field, naming the date by which the document will arrive. Your file is parked in a "documents pending" lane and reviewed as soon as the missing piece arrives. The placeholder does not delay the rest of the review.
Can I switch tiers after applying?
Yes. If you began a Master's file but qualify for direct doctoral entry — or the reverse — write to the admissions desk. Your existing documents transfer; only the missing tier-specific items must be added. There is no second application fee within the same admissions cycle.

Your record speaks first. Send it well.

Every complete file gets a faculty reader. Begin your application, attach the documents you have, and our admissions desk will walk the rest of the path with you.
